A terrific way to explore the St. George River watershed is to participate in an event sponsored by the Georges River Land Trust. Join us for hikes, boat trips, and nature talks. We can help you discover the special wonders of this beautiful place. Be sure to check back here often for new events.

Saturday, January 21, 6:45 am – 8 am
Fourth Annual Eagle Watch in Warren, led by Don Reimer, local bird enthusiast and volunteer at GRLT and Mid-Coast Audubon Society. Early morning is an ideal time to see large numbers of eagles fly over the St. George River. View artifacts from local eagle's nests from Don’s collection. Suitable for families. Bring binoculars, dress warmly and bring a mug of coffee or hot chocolate! Meet at Damariscotta Bank & Trust parking lot, 289 Camden Road (Rte. 90).Warren, where as many as 60 eagles may soar overhead! Rain/snow date will be Sunday, January 22.

Showing of the film, Queen of the Sun - What are the bees telling us? This film is a profound, alternative look at the global bee crisis. Taking us on a journey through the catastrophic disappearance of bees and the mysterious world of the beehive, this engaging and ultimately uplifting film weaves an unusual and dramatic story of the heartfelt struggles of beekeepers, scientists and philosophers from around the world. Join us at the Vose Library in Union.

Woody Thompson, a glacial geologist with the Maine Geological Survey, will give an illustrated talk about the Maine mid-coast region as it emerged from the last glacial ice sheet 15,000 years ago. Thompson will describe how this process affected the land, along with related sea-level changes and the importance of glacial deposits to coastal Maine homeowners and the economy. This is the second part of a series discussing the glacial geology of mid-coast Maine, sponsored by GRLT and the Rockland Public Library. The meeting location is in the downstairs meeting room of the Rockland Library.

Tour of Hatchet Cove Farm, a family run organic farm in Warren. Join Reba Richardson and Bill Pleuker, owners of Hatchet Cove Farm, a working farm under easement with GRLT and a Community Supported Agriculture endeavor. Learn some gardening tips, how to start seeds, milk cows and other farming skills! Suitable for individuals and families. The farm is located on 1133 Finntown Road in Warren. Directions:
Driving south on Route 1 after Thomaston, pass the Route 1/Route 90 Intersection. Watch for Lie-Nielsen Toolworks, then take a left onto Finntown Road (follow sign for Beau Chemin farm). Drive 2.1 miles down Finntown Rd., take a right at the sign for Hatchet Cove Farm. Come down the driveway and join the tour!

Opening of the Weskeag Marsh trail and kiosk. Join GRLT and State of Maine Department of Inland Fish and Wildlife for a talk about migratory bird activity at the Weskeag Marsh. Suitable for families and individuals. Spotting scopes will be available and there will be an activity for children. Meet at Weskeag Marsh parking area on Buttermilk Lane, one mile south of Rte. 1.

Saturday, June 6, 10 am – noon
Shoreland Bird Quest in Thomaston. Join GRLT for a family fun Quest to discover shorebirds along the Thomaston waterfront. A Quest is a fun and lyrical way to tell a story about a particular place – maybe a downtown village, a fishing harbor, or a nature preserve. Questing is the recreational pursuit of this story, across any land- or seascape.
Commonly written in rhyming verse, a Quest contains movement clues that get you from one spot to the next. The features at these spots illustrate the story. Quests also have informational clues, that interpret the meaning of the features and their place in the story. Meeting place will be announced soon.

History Along the River - A Pre-Paddle Talk at Lyman-Morse in Thomaston. Historian Renny Stackpole will talk about early shipbuilding in the Warren area and other topics related
to the activities along the St. George River, specifically along the Thomaston-to-Warren stretch. A representative of Georges River Tidewater Association will also
give a brief overview of water quality issues, in preparation for the GRLT river trip planned for Saturday, July 21. This is the first
in a 3-part/3-year series designed to help participants gain an appreciation for the connections between this area's cultural history and the Georges River landscape, as manifested along the river's full length. Contact GRLT for directions.

Paddle the estuarine portion of the St. George River, from Thomaston to Warren led by Dick Matlack, boating enthusiast
and GRLT volunteer, and learn about water quality monitoring from a representative of Georges River Tidewater Association.
Suitable for families. A shorter paddle will be planned for those who prefer not to paddle all the way to Warren. Bring picnic lunch, canoe or kayak and PFD’s. Meet at Thomaston Town Landing on Water Street.

Nature walk for families at the Gibson Preserve in Searsmont. This 124-acre preserve has diverse wildlife habitats in its conifer forest and along the meandering shore of the St. George River. A short children’s program will accompany the walk to engage the young naturalist in your family. Call GRLT to sign up and get directions to the Gibson Preserve.

Tour of the BrightBuilt Barn in Rockport. Join Keith and Mary Collins for a tour of the first project of BrightBuilt, an open source collaboration of green building professionals. Keith will lead a tour of the barn and explain the philosophy behind its construction, the design/building process, the materials used, and the energy and space-use benefits it provides. Enjoy seeing this innovative project in its beautiful setting. Limited to 20 persons. Please call GRLT office to register and receive directions.

Hike on the Canal Path, an interpretative trail. Learn about the newest discoveries of this section of canal and another piece of the mystery uncovered! Led by Dave Getchell, GRLT volunteer, this hike is suitable for children and families. Bring snack and water and meet at the Canal Path in Searsmont. From Fraternity Village Store in Searsmont, head south on Route 131 for 1.7 miles to Ghent Road on the left. Travel 0.25 miles on Ghent Road to the parking lot on the right just after crossing the bridge.

Resurgence of the Wild Turkey in Maine. Kelsey Sullivan, a biologist with the Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife, will talk about the expansion of wild turkey populations in Maine at the Rockland Public Library. The State actively reintroduced turkeys from 1942-88, and turkeys are now found from York to Penobscot Counties.
