Revelry for the RiverCelebrating 25 Years of Conservation along the St. George River
A SPECIAL TOUR AND TASTING AT BREAKWATER VINEYARDSSaturday, May 19, 2012; 5-7 PM Vintners Bill and Jeanne Johnson will host you at their winery in Owls
Head. Guests will be treated to special tastings, including samples of
some of Breakwater Vineyards' newest releases. Since acquiring the
former equestrian center in 2007, the Johnsons have planted over 3,000
vines, which include nine varieties of grapes. The wines are aged in
either stainless or oak barrels depending on the desired fermentation
style. Guests will savor wine and appetizer pairings as they overlook
Rockland Harbor and the Camden Hills. Another star attraction: the
vineyard’s “ambassador” goats. THE ART OF BOATBUILDING: LYMAN-MORSEThursday, June 21, 2012; 4:30-7 PM Boat building has been a significant feature of the Thomaston
waterfront for more than 150 years. For more than a century, graceful
Alden Malabar schooners and sturdy Friendship sloops “slid
down the ways” in Thomaston, “the town that went to
sea.” In the late 1970’s Lyman-Morse opened it
doors on the St. George River and quickly earned a reputation for
building
exceptional customized sailing and motor yachts. Come see what boat
building is like today. You will tour the eco-friendly
“green” facility of Lyman-Morse to learn more about
how modern techniques, together with traditional boat building skills,
produce these beautiful yachts. Then, enjoy wine and hors
d’oeuvres on the bank of the St. George River.
WINE AND DINE – OYSTER RIVER WINEGROWERS & UPROOT PIE CO.
Oyster River Winegrowers’ Brian Smith and Uproot Pie
Company’s Jessica Shepard combine their talents to present a
unique dining experience. Brian and Allie Smith purchased their 57-
acre Warren farm in 2007 and planted their first grapevines in 2008. As
their own vines mature, they are creating wines from grape varieties
sourced from across the country. The Smiths are producing a dry,
aromatic Reisling, a Merlot and a Petite Sirah plus two house blends.
Jessica Shepard’s Uproot Pie Co. has become a major hit at
the local farmers markets. Using her mobile, wood fired oven she produces
an exceptional variety of artisan pizzas and flat breads. Join us in
the barn’s tasting room for a selection of Oyster
River’s latest estate bottled wines along with hors
d’oeuvres and a scrumptious dinner from Uproot Pie.

FROM ABANDONED QUARRY TO GARDEN OF EDEN
The Clark Island Wildlife Refuge, a 50-acre habitat restoration and
preservation site, is adjacent to Leonard Greenhalgh’s home.
Over a 25-year span, Len has transformed the long abandoned granite
quarry into diverse habitats that complement efforts to preserve the
Long Cove and Weskeag River ecosystems. This project shows how private
landowners can create a lasting legacy of preserved habitat.
Surrounding Len’s house, a half-mile of stone walls
encompasses more than 50 flower beds, which will be in full bloom for
this event. The Georges River Land Trust featured these gardens on
their Gardens in the Watershed tour in 2009. In addition to the tour, Alex
Mas of The Nature Conservancy will discuss Maine’s Natural Resources
Conservation Program. The event will include wine and a catered dinner.
FIDDLING AROUND CELTIC-STYLE
Share a summer’s evening of Celtic fiddle music with GRLT

provided by Rob and Margot Kelley at their lovely seaside home in Port
Clyde.

Ledge, The Brothers, Mosquito and Monhegan Islands. While partygoers
are enjoying the ambience of the evening on the rocky shore, John is

and migratory birds abound. The tour leaves from our waterfront shop in
the quaint village of Port Clyde. Marshall Point, one of
Maine’s most photographed lighthouses, is a short paddle from
our launch site. Heading away from the harbor, the tour will skirt the
shoreline towards tranquil Deep Cove. There might even be a landing on
a nearby island. At the end of the paddle, there will be light
refreshments served on the deck overlooking the harbor. This tour is
appropriate for beginners and experienced kayakers alike. Please arrive
thirty minutes early for instruction before the tour. Children 12 years
and above are welcome.

headwaters of the St. George River at Lake St. George in Liberty. Pass
properties preserved and protected by the Georges River Land Trust such
as the conserved Paulsen Farm and Riverview Hayfields. Motorcyclists
will meet at the Warren Community School on Route 131 in Warren and the
trip will
end at Alvin’s 1784 farmhouse in Warren for appropriate
refreshments.
A MODERN SAWMILL – ROBBINS LUMBER COMPANY
Although founded in 1881, today the fifth generation of the Robbins
family is managing one of the most modern sawmills in the United
States. Sawing eastern white pine logs from all over Maine, the mill is
making grading decisions aided by lasers and computers. The lumber is
also trimmed and sorted by computers. Wood-waste fired boilers provide
the steam to dry the lumber. At this mill some of the best white pine
products in the country are produced. Up to ninety different molding
patterns are cut at speeds up to 600 feet per minute. Owner Jim Robbins
will lead the tour. After the tour, Jim and his wife Ann will entertain
you at their nearby home with the history of their family. There you
will enjoy beverages, including wine and beer, and appetizers. Robbins
Lumber received the Maine Department of Conservation Austin
H. Wilkins Forest Stewardship Award in 2011. LIFTING THE CURTAIN ON ELECTION COVERAGE Thursday, October 18, 2012; 5:30 PM Ever wonder how a network “calls" the winner just as voting
ends? Then here's your chance to go backstage at the ABC News Decision
Desk. Clark University emeritus professor of government John
Blydenburgh of Tenants Harbor will be at that desk on Election Night
2012. He has four decades of experience in tracking polls, exit polls
and other data leading to Projected Winner “calls”
for Congress, the White House and Governors’ mansions. John
has been validating results since Nixon turned back the challenge from
McGovern. Before airing, the Decision Desk projections are passed to
Election Night’s live-coverage producer. Robert Siegenthaler
of Port Clyde held that post for five national elections in his role as
Executive Producer of Special Events for ABC News. Now retired, he
still knows a thing or two about hanging-'chads', gadget-graphics and a
viewer's 'systems overload'. Both men will welcome your questions. HALLOWEEN SPOOKTACULAR PARTY Saturday, October 27, 2012; 5-8 PM Gremlins and goblins and witches on brooms; CAROLING IN THOMASTON Sunday, December 16, 2012; 6 PM Hark!! Come caroling in Thomaston. Carl Danielson and Carolyn Whitaker

Down East Singers, will lead the group. After caroling through the
neighborhoods of this nineteenth-century town, the revelers will return
to this Greek Revival home, which was built for a sea captain in 1852.
